Farmhouse Animal and Nature Sanctuary (FANS) located in Myakka City, is always looking for like-minded animal lovers to help with the seemingly never-ending list of chores to be done both at the sanctuary and virtually. Whether it’s feeding the animals and cleaning their feed areas to larger projects like fence or irrigation repairs to setting up fundraisers, FANS can always use good help. Larry Hamilton is one of our feed and clean crew. Although he works full time, he does his best to volunteer once a week. We asked Larry a few questions about his experience at FANS:
How did you hear about FANS?

I am very happy to give Sue Clapper kudos for turning me on to Farmhouse. I love giving my free time to animals in any capacity and from the first time I stepped onto the property I knew I wanted to be involved with all these awesome animals.
What do you do as a volunteer?
Mainly love on the animals but I also feed and clean up after them.
What is the most rewarding or favorite part of volunteering?
As corny as I’m sure this sounds the best part of volunteering in any situation is just the awesome feeling of giving back to the universe, I’m proud to say that I have been volunteering for 25+ years!
Which animal is your favorite at FANS?

I love all of them but without a doubt Ms. Ginger (bunny) has won my heart over the most.
What other hobbies do you have?
I love all kinds of tortoises and turtles but sea turtles are my fav. I also love the beach and trying new cuisine.
What pointers would you share with someone who is thinking of becoming a volunteer?
When volunteering you must be compassionate, consistent and treat it like a job.

If you could ask for one thing to help the animals at FANS, what would it be?
For me to be a full time employee
Any additional comments you would like to include?
I just want to thank Lisa & Dave for this wonderful opportunity and for all the joy their animals provide for me
